Title:How Did Sher fail to participate? Examining student participation through THE LENS OF commognitive framework 


Abstract:This study examined the interactive problem solving by four Chinese students through the lens of cognitive framework. We particularly focused on one student, Sher, who seemed to actively participate in group activities at the beginning of the group discussion, but turned out mostly engaged in self-talking activities by the end of the discussion. Drawing on the cognitive framework, student participation profiles, participation structures and their roles-in-activity were examined. The paper describes the use of cognitive framework in analyzing four-student group discussion, and reports on how the cognitive framework contributes to explain student participation during collaborative problem solving.
