Located by the picturesque Slender West Lake, the College of Mathematical Science belongs to one of the oldest colleges of Yangzhou University. It was founded in 1952 and originally known as the Mathematical Faculty of Subei Normal College. In 1958 it developed into the Mathematical Department of Yangzhou Normal College and started to enroll undergraduate students. In 1992, it was renamed as the Mathematical Department of the College of Science when Yangzhou Normal College merged with the College of Agriculture, College of Engineering, College of Hydraulic Science, College of Business and College of Medicine to form a new comprehensive Yangzhou University. Then finally in 2002, it took on its current name.
The college now offers three undergraduate programs including Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science and Statistics. Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (Teaching), a provincial-level key program, has been listed among Programs with Distinctive Features at the National Level. Information and Computing Science is a key program at school level. The two mathematical programs (Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science) are key provincial-level ones during the 12th Five Year Plan of Jiangsu. The College also boasts Postdoctoral Research Station for Mathematics, doctoral program of Mathematics, postgraduate programs of Statistics, Basic Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Numerical Mathematics, Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Operational Research and Control, as well as (mathematical) Curriculum and Teaching Methodology. Moreover, Basic Mathematics were listed as key provincial disciplines in different stages of Five-Year Plans of the province from 1996 to 2010.
The college has 86 teaching staff, among which 27 are professors, 36 are associate professors, 43 are master’s supervisors, one is awarded as “New Century Excellent Talents in University” by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and another one is supported by the “Excellent Young Teachers Programs” of MOE. The College is home to over 800 full-time undergraduate students and more than 190 graduate students.
After sixty years of development, the college has developed a comprehensive disciplinary hierarchy and a multi-layered platform for talent cultivation, which are supported by a team of dedicated and excellent teachers. Over the years, it has built on its strengths of Basic Mathematics and fully leveraged its comprehensive network of disciplines in order to promote the cross-disciplinary studies between mathematics and engineering, biology, etc. Fruitful results have been yielded in the research of differential geometry, dynamical system, partial differential equation, functional analysis, complex network, biomathematics, representation theory and quantum group, as well as coding and cryptology. It has also undertaken a large number of national-level research projects with international influence. It won Jiangsu Science Congress Award in 1978 and five awards for scientific and technological advancement. One of faculty members has been listed among the World Highly Cited Researchers from 2014 to 2017, a significant contribution to the university’s ESI ranking which have climbed to the top 1% recently.
The college’s library contains over 100,000 books, 269 periodicals, 130,000 electronic books and 273 electronic periodicals in Chinese and other languages. It offers access to American Mathematical Society (AMS) database. Rich collections provide ideal conditions for study, teaching and research. The college also published two magazines, namely, High School Mathematics- Teaching and Learning and Secondary School Mathematics- Teaching and Learning, which enjoy great influence across the country and have contributed to the improvement of the high-school teaching of mathematics.
The college upholds high standards of teaching, with its teaching quality constantly improving. Over the past century, the college has developed itself into an important base in the province for the cultivation of mathematical talents both at undergraduate and graduate levels. Among the first eighteen scholars who received doctoral degrees in China, two of them graduated from our college.
Our students have active attitudes of learning and outstanding academic performance. Each year more than a dozen of students would be recommended for admission to postgraduate programs or further their studies overseas. Our students are also award-winners of academic contests, including the Chinese Mathematics Competition, China Undergraduates Mathematical Contest Modeling, National Post-Graduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, MCM/ICM, Lanqiao Cup National Software Competition, National Post-Graduate Mathematical Teaching Contest, National Cryptography Math Challenge, etc.
In the future, we will be more hardworking in seeking our own way of development. We will take disciplinary development as a priority, cultivate more talents, improve strength in research, and maintain the quality of teaching in order to realize balanced development. In such development, quality of teaching is the theme, reform and innovation are the engine while stronger ability to serve the society is the objective. What we are striving for is to develop into a high-level college with great strengths in research and distinctive features in multi-disciplinary studies.
The college is situated in Yangzhou, a renowned city with a long history. As early as 486 BC, King Fuchai of Wu founded the Han City and built the Han Canal that connected the Huaihe River and Yangtze River, which can be seen as the beginning of the city’s 2,500 years of history. Yangzhou is a livable city with beautiful environment. It was awarded UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour and was listed among Top 10 Livable Cities in China. The city, with its open and inclusive environment, attracts high caliber talents to start their enterprises here.
Yangzhou also enjoys profound culture. In ancient times, it was home to renowned figures such as Jianzhen, Shi Kefa, Zheng Banqiao and Zhu Ziqing. Nowadays, more than 84 academicians have gone from here to the world. What’s more, the city is also dubbed as “Top City along the Grand Canal of China”, “City of Hot Spring”, “the Birthplace of Huaiyang Cuisine”.
Only when living in pleasant environment can people settle down to their jobs. We hope more scholars and talents can choose Yangzhou University in such beautiful city of Yangzhou to further develop the discipline of mathematics.
